Quill is a reading app built around a simple idea: your reading is yours. This policy explains what we collect, what we don't, and why. Plain language, no surprises.
The short version
Your library, highlights, notes, and reading activity live on your device. In Guest mode nothing is sent to us at all. We don't sell data, we don't run ad networks, and we never see the contents of your books or your AI prompts.
What we collect
If you use Guest mode: nothing leaves your device. No account, no server records.
If you sign in with Apple (for Quill Pro sync): we receive a stable, app-specific identifier from Apple and, if you choose to share it, your email (which may be Apple's private relay address). We use this only to identify your account and sync your data across your devices.
Synced reading data (Pro): when sync is on, your highlights, notes, vocabulary, and reading progress are stored on our servers (Cloudflare) so they appear on your other devices. Book files are not uploaded by sync.
Diagnostics: anonymous, aggregate usage counts (e.g. "a book was opened") to understand what's used. No content, no per-person tracking profiles.
What we never collect
- The text or contents of the books you read.
- Your highlights or notes, unless you turn on Pro sync.
- Your AI prompts. AI features are off by default; when enabled, requests go directly from your device to the provider you configured (OpenAI, Anthropic, etc.) using your own key. We are never in that path.
- Anything at all in Guest mode.
Payments
Subscriptions and in-app purchases are processed by Apple. We never see your card details. For purchases made on the web (where offered), payment is processed by Stripe; we receive only confirmation that a purchase succeeded.
Extensions & AI providers
Extensions are sandboxed and declare exactly what they can access before you install them. Any API keys you enter for an AI provider are stored in your device's Keychain and are never transmitted to Quill.
Authors & the marketplace
If you publish books or extensions, we store the account, submission, and sales information needed to run the marketplace and pay you. Payouts use Stripe Connect; Stripe collects the tax and identity information required by law to pay you, under Stripe's own privacy terms.
Children
Quill is not directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect data from them.
Your choices
- Use Guest mode to keep everything local.
- Sign out anytime to stop syncing.
- Request deletion of your account and synced data by contacting us.
